The Value of Our Photographs

I recently received the following email from a client, which got me thinking about the value of our photographs…

“I unfortunately had my purse stolen on Thursday night, and with it was the wonderful little photo book you made me – am wondering if it is at all possible to have another one made? It is actually the thing I am most upset about losing.”

This brought back memories for me, of when I had moved back to Toronto from Vancouver, and was awaiting the arrival of my possessions, which were traveling across the country on a transport truck. I’m not sure where I was, but my mother called to tell me that she just received news that the truck had been broken into – my racing bike, my computer – gone. She said there were still some boxes that came home, and she had put them upstairs. I rushed home, ran upstairs, and looked for one box only – the one holding my photo albums. Alas – to my great relief – it had not been stolen. I did not care about anything else (even though it was certainly unfortunate). I had my photographs, and that was all that really mattered in that moment.

Fast forward to today – and one of the main reasons that I love what I do for a living – and that is, getting to create lasting memories for others for years to come. A photograph really does keep on giving, in so many ways.

Now… I can’t do a blog post without a picture, so I dug out an old picture of myself (that came across Canada on that truck that day). I am pictured in front (in blue), with my sister (top left), and our neighbourhood friend, top right. Thanks for reading!
